Read more »A top advisor to the UK Government has said that without drastic action – including the promotion of vaping as a less harmful alternative to smoking – the country will miss its smoke-free 2030 target by 7 years.
Dr Javed Khan OBE – a senior NHS leader and former CEO of the Barnardos children’s charity – was asked to review Britain’s progress towards its target of a smoking prevalence of less than 5% by 2030.
Khan’s report to the Department of Health makes for critical recommendations:
- Increase investment - around £125 million in smoke-free 2030 policies should fund accessible stop smoking support; while Khan also recommends implementing a tobacco industry levy in order to raise the money.
- Increase the age of sale

Global charities and health campaigners are calling on smokers to quit their deadly cigarette habit on World No Tobacco Day.
Cancer Research UK has released new analysis which estimates one person dies every five minutes from tobacco in Britain and has called on the government to do more to help smokers quit.
It has launched a petition to coincide with World No Tobacco Day today, asking for the Prime Minister to establish a “Smokefree Fund ” which would help pay for the cost of tobacco control, which it says is seriously underfunded.
Meanwhile, a group of leading tobacco harm reduction groups including World Vapers’ Alliance have been highlighting vaping’s role in cutting death and disease from smoking with the launch of World Vape Day yesterday (May 30th).

NEW research shows vaping prevents smokers from having a long-term relapse – even if they try a cigarette.
Ex smokers don’t lapse for long if they’ve swapped to e-cigarettes and crucially don’t see it as “game over” for their quit attempt if they briefly re-try tobacco again, an investigation by British university researchers has found.
The findings, funded by Cancer Research UK and published in the medical journal Drug and Alcohol Review, show vaping actively encourages not just smoking cessation, but long-term relapse prevention.

POLITICIANS have called for vaping to be allowed in the workplace – with the UK's Houses of Parliament leading the way as a vape-friendly zone, it has been revealed.
In a drive to make e-cigarettes more acceptable at places of work in Britain - and given separate rules to smoking - a group of MPs (Members of Parliament) have called for new policies to be drawn up to help address common “misunderstandings” about the practice.
Members of the All-Party Parliamentary Group for Vaping (APPGV) agreed designated vaping areas inside offices should be considered along with employers allowing e-cigarette use in all outside areas unless there is a legitimate safety or professional reason not to, according to UK news agency Press Association.
There should also be guidelines for the “reasonable vaping etiquette expected from vapers”.

SMOKERS wanting to quit their cigarette habit have been urged to spend time with people who vape, following new research funded by Cancer Research UK.
Scientists at University College London, who conducted the study, found that smokers who spend time with e-cigarette users were 20 times more likely to try and ditch tobacco for good.
Over one in four cigarette smokers in the survey said they were regularly in close contact with e-cigarettes in the past year, with around a third (32.3 per cent) of those admitting they had tried to quit through vaping in the past year, according to the academic survey published in the BMC Medicine journal this week.

MARLBORO makers Altria has pulled its e-cigarette pods from the market - which critics claim is an attempt to get their biggest rival Juul to follow suit.
Altria Group Inc announced on Thursday it would also be discontinuing the sale of most of its flavoured e-cigarettes in response to the US Food and Drink Administration's (FDA) drive to stop underage vaping.
Altria's brands, MarketTen Elite and Apex, represent just nine per cent of the American market, which is dominated by Juul Labs, currently under fire for sparking a so-called "epidemic" of vaping use among teenagers.
But critics say Altria has more to gain than lose by pulling some of it's vape products.

A GLOBAL coalition of vaping industry groups has called on the World Health Organisation to change its stance on allowing vaping to be banned.
Advocacy groups from sixteen countries across North America, Europe, Asia and Australasia have joined forces to demand the public health agency reverse its stance, which allows some countries to make vaping illegal.
At present, while WHO recognizes vaping’s potential for reducing smoking rates, the agency’s tobacco control group contradicts it by allowing member states to ban vaping products outright, should they wish to, as part of a tobacco control plan.
Britain’s largest vaping body, the UK Vaping Industry Association (UKVIA) is now leading a call to action to change its stance. A shock announcement on Friday has confirmed the UK as the world’s most vape-friendly country. Just three weeks before the door closes for manufacturers to submit notifications under the new regulations, the MHRA announced that they would no longer require full ingredient disclosure from e-liquid manufacturers.
It’s a move that will delight those who struggled to get their flavor suppliers to give up trade secrets but infuriate those who have invested a small fortune on toxicological work that now seems redundant. We anticipate that many more US e-liquid brands will now consider the UK as a territory worth doing business in.

Professor Stanton Glantz, ardent opponent of vaping, has engaged in the first interview (that I know of) by a vaping supporter.
Brent Stafford questioned Glantz over a 10 minute Skype session for his RegulatorWatch.com show, and the video (part 1) is available on YouTube
Glantz's cites three main reasons for his opposition to vaping:
He believes they are 40 to 60% safer than smoking which, he contends, is not very safe considering the dangers of smoking.
He believes most smokers do not make the full transition, instead becoming "dual users"
He believes vaping is attracting "gigantic numbers of kids who probably would never pick up a cigarette but are initiating nicotine use with e-cigarettes and then transitioning to cigarettes later"

A leading UK public health official has called for more support for people using “the number one quit aid - vaping devices” ahead of the annual “Stoptober” event, urging a rethink of policies in light of the recent re-evaluation of the risks and effectiveness of vaping products.
Professor Kevin Fenton, director of Health and Wellbeing at Public Health England made his statements on BBC radio yesterday while promoting the annual national smoking cessation campaign. Vapour products feature this year for the first time in the Stoptober messaging as an option for smoking cessation.
