  1. UK Government advisor backs vaping to achieve smoke-free 2030

UK Government advisor backs vaping to achieve smoke-free 2030

A top advisor to the UK Government has said that without drastic action – including the promotion of vaping as a less harmful alternative to smoking – the country will miss its smoke-free 2030 target by 7 years.

Dr Javed Khan OBE – a senior NHS leader and former CEO of the Barnardos children’s charity – was asked to review Britain’s progress towards its target of a smoking prevalence of less than 5% by 2030.

Khan’s report to the Department of Health makes for critical recommendations:

    • Increase investment - around £125 million in smoke-free 2030 policies should fund accessible stop smoking support; while Khan also recommends implementing a tobacco industry levy in order to raise the money.
    • Increase the age of sale

  2. The NHS and Vaping

    The NHS and Vaping

The NHS and vaping - how does the British healthcare system treat vapers?

Britain’s National Health Service is unquestionably the most popular institution the country has. Founded in 1945, it offers all kinds of healthcare free at the point of use to anyone in the country who needs it.

The British Government has also been at the forefront of encouraging smokers to switch to less harmful products like vapes or nicotine pouches. The Department of Health, backed by medical doctors at the Royal College of Physicians, regularly tells smokers that they’d be far better off if they vaped, and that vaping is 95% less harmful than smoking.

But how does the NHS itself - the hospitals and other healthcare facilities that fall within the remit of this huge national treasure - deal with vaping in the real world?

    We decided to

  3. Vaping and the environment

Vaping and the environment - everything you need to know.

We’re all trying to be environmentally friendly these days, and for a lot of people that means cutting down on plastic waste. It's difficult to vape these days without encountering some form of single use plastic, although there are still some vape juice brands that use glass bottles.

But what’s the likely impact of vaping on the environment, and how can we try to minimize the amount of plastic waste we produce while vaping?

Is vaping as bad as cigarettes for the environment?

    Simply put, no.

Cigarette butts don’t just smell disgusting, they are also one of the most pervasive forms of pollution. There are a staggering 4.5 trillion individual cigarette butts polluting the oceans right now, making

The Ugly Truth About Clone Vape Mods

Clone Vape Mods: Deal or Disaster?

Knock-off products are nothing new; Purses or shoes that look identical to the real thing, with a much lower price tag, of course. You can’t fault people for buying them. Sometimes they’re even great for a laugh. But, what about clone vape mods? Are these drastically cheaper kits a great deal? Or, is there something far more insidious going on?

    What Are Clone Vape Mods?

Clone vape mods are, as the name suggests, clones of another vape mod. These are often identical to a brand name mod, and nearly impossible to tell apart at a glance.

Despite them looking identical to a brand name mod, clone vape mods are also much cheaper than their name

  6. INFOGRAPHIC: The year in vaping

    INFOGRAPHIC: The year in vaping

Even by the standards of an industry where ground breaking years are the norm, 2016 will go down in history as a period where vaping was changed forever.

FDA unveiled its new regulations that essentially amount to a ban, but all this could change next year with a new President in the White House. Europe regulated the industry with a much lighter touch and Canada announced plans to legalize and regulate nicotine-containing vape juice for the first time.

Doctors in the UK demanded that the government there promote vaping heavily as an alternative to smoking. And there were also a lot of new product launches and, of course, the launch of vaping.com.

We recap the year’s most important events in this infographic. And if you’re looking to change your habits in the new year, or you need a new vape kit, we’re offering 10% off across vaping.com with the code “YEARINVAPING”.

New Zealand un-bans vaping, says it's good for public health

The government of the islands of New Zealand - a country of 5 million people off the coast of Australia, has reversed its ban on nicotine-containing vape juice.

In a bold move, the New Zealand government also decided to exempt nicotine containing liquids from the strong tobacco control laws in New Zealand - a country where cigarettes are sold in plain packages with some of the highest excise taxes in the world.

"That's an important thing", said New Zealand Health Minister Nicky Wagner, "so that when a smoker goes into the dairy, he or she will see cigarettes at a very high price and e-cigarettes much cheaper."

It's not all good news, however, as vaping will be banned in enclosed public spaces. But on the whole, vape

Vaping and the US elections – what will happen next?

It was only a few months ago that the whole vaping community stood still to watch the industry clash with tobacco control organisations in a roundtable with President Trump. That event led the President to limit a proposed ban on non-tobacco flavours.

But after the end of a marathon Presidential race, the situation seems to have changed once again.

Although the legal challenges will need to work their way through the Court system, there is now little doubt that Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will become the next President and Vice President of the United States.

But with FDA regulations coming into force just before polling day, what does all this mean for the future of vaping?

Biden has only made one statement on the topic so far:

…I choose science over fiction. And so if the science has demonstrated [that vaping] is doing great damage then I don't care what it does to a small business person who's selling this stuff.

What will a Trump Administration mean for vaping?

We don’t really know what Trump thinks about vaping, it wasn’t a major Presidential campaign issue. But we do know that he hates Government regulation: during the campaign he said that around 70% of Federal regulations could go under his Presidency. We also know that Tump allies in Congress like Duncan Hunter – the second Congressman to endorse Trump for President back in February – are big supporters of the vaping community.

So we don’t know whether getting the deeming regulation off the books is on the Trump list of priorities. If it is, we don’t

America’s “worst vaping law” struck down by Federal Courts

A State law on vaping in Indiana – dubbed the worst of “crony capitalism and protectionism” by American Vaping Association head Greg Conley, has been partially struck down by a Federal appeals court.

The law, which effectively banned out-of-state eliquid manufacturers from selling in Indiana by imposing detailed security and production process measures on all product sold in the State, was the subject of a scathing review by Judge David Hamilton of the United States Court of Appeals for the 7th Circuit:

"The Act is written so as to have extraterritorial reach that is unprecedented, imposing detailed requirements

Public health expert destroys CDC, Surgeon General

Public health experts have roundly condemned the actions of the Centre for Disease Control and the Surgeon General in light of new data that shows a dramatic fall in youth vaping.

Vapour product use among high schoolers is down across America, according to the 2016 Monitoring the Future study from the University of Michigan. The survey shows that youth vaping declined significantly from 2015 to 2016, dropping from 16.3 percent to 12.5 percent among 12th graders.

Smoking rates were also down dramatically: since peaking in 1996-1997, smoking rates have fallen by 71 percent among 12th graders (from 36.5% to 10.5% who smoke), by 84 percent among 10th graders (from 30.4 percent to 4.9 percent) and by 88% among 8th graders (21% to 2.6%).

  12. Did the UK just become the world's most vape-friendly country?

Did the UK just become the world's most vape-friendly country?

A shock announcement on Friday has confirmed the UK as the world’s most vape-friendly country. Just three weeks before the door closes for manufacturers to submit notifications under the new regulations, the MHRA announced that they would no longer require full ingredient disclosure from e-liquid manufacturers.

It’s a move that will delight those who struggled to get their flavor suppliers to give up trade secrets but infuriate those who have invested a small fortune on toxicological work that now seems redundant. We anticipate that many more US e-liquid brands will now consider the UK as a territory worth doing business in.

MHRA sent an email to the industry Friday that included the following statement:

  13. FDA takes aim at vapers

    FDA takes aim at vapers

Two years after first proposing to regulate vapour products as tobacco, the Food and Drug Administration has finally followed through on its threat.

The new rule will take effect on 8 August this year and effectively freeze the category after that date. While all products on the market by that point will have two years to submit a Premarket Tobacco Application (of which more later) in order to remain legal, every product invented after 8/8/16 will need that authorization to be approved prior to marketing.

Getting FDA authorization will be impossible for almost all vape businesses. Companies will have to prove that their products are “appropriate for the protection of public health”, an almost impossible standard to meet and one that is not clearly defined. In order to meet it, FDA states that companies will need to spend millions of dollars per individual product just to get a hearing. Most companies won’t bother trying and will exit the market in two years’ time, or look

A Billion Lives, A Billion Thanks!

Billed as “a true story of government failure, big business and the vaping revolution” and featuring ECF’s very own Oliver “Smokey Joe” Kershaw, vaping documentary "A Billion Lives" premiered to acclaim last month in Wellington, New Zealand. Since then, the team have been taking the film across the globe on a tour of screenings and film festivals.

The European premier takes place tomorrow in Warsaw, Poland, before the team head home to start preparing for the US launch. This could be the film that changes minds on vaping around the world - but the team needs the support of vapers.

Unless you've had your head under a mod you'll have heard of Aaron Biebert's film. Over the years, many attempts have been made to document the vaping movement. Until now, none has been successful, principally because the funding requirements to do it justice are huge. But Aaron has pulled it off.

We caught up with him while he was in Warsaw and asked
