Smok Novo Master Kit Review

Smok Novo Master Review

The Smok Novo Master Kit is exactly the vape that adult vapers have been asking for. It has draw-activation, is compact enough for on-the-go vaping, features new coil designs and is also compatible with previous generations of Smok Novo pods. It is a versatile version of the quintessential Smok vape kit

It is nice to avoid planned obsolescence with a workaday vape, especially when it provides performance comparable to one-time use disposable vapes and the expensive prefilled pod system manufactured by Big Tobacco.

There are two Smok Master kits. There is the regular Novo Master which looks like a traditional Smok Novo and there is the Smok Novo Master Box. Vaping.com carries a wide range of Smok vape kits and refillable pod kits including both Smok Novo Master kits. They are ideal for salt nic vapers. Today we are going to look at the standard Smok Novo Master Kit, which shares its form factor with a traditional Smok Novo.

Smok Novo Master Kit Compatibility

Pros and Cons Smok Novo Master Kit

Pros: The Smok Novo Master is compatible with earlier pod designs but comes with improved top-fill Novo pods. 30W boost mode, adjustable airflow and a long-lasting battery make it an ideal alternative to disposable vapes.

Cons: The Smok Novo Master lacks the fully adjustable wattage pod system interface of the Smok Novo 4 and 5.

Smok Novo Master Kit Review

As a long-time advocate of refillable pod kits, initially in place of the overpriced gas station kits like Juul and now as a superior option to disposable vapes, the Smok Novo Master Kit is exactly what I want. Its pared down look stands in stark contrast to the increasingly garish screen you find on products like Geek Bar. It has a surprising heft and quality to it, especially for an old Novo 3 user. Its features adjustable airflow, and boost mode, are discrete and easy to activate.

In terms of performance, the top-fill did take some getting used to for this old Novo-head. For six years I've been wrestling and finagling pods to squeeze out every bubble. Imagine my surprise when I gave the bottle an extra squeeze and juice came popping out the other side! But empirically, this is a far superior design. No silicone stopper to pick open with your fingernails, a firmer magnetic attachment keeps the pod secure, and the flavor is enhanced with the revamped pods.

For being the same size pod, comparable resistance and in theory same output, unless in boost mode, the Smok Novo Master coils seem a bit thirstier than the 0.8ohm Smok Novo pods of the past. This is probably because the juice ports that feed the wicking are twice as large.

One advantage that the Novo Master Kit has over the Novo Master Box is that it offers draw-activation and button-fire.

Smok Novo Master Dual Modes

Dual modes puts performance more in line with rival pod system designs like the UWell Caliburn and many of the Vaporesso XROS models. A button-fire enhances the vaping experience for many who choose to stick with lower nicotine vapes.

Smok Novo Master Kit Battery

Smok Novo Master Battery

The Smok Novo Master Kit has a 1000mAh battery, an upgrade on the 800mAh battery in Novos 2 through 4 and the 900mAh battery found in the Smok Novo 5. Charging is accomplished with USB Type-C, and the cable is included. Type-C USB greatly improves the charging time, and this is a great reason for a fan of the earlier Novo 2 and 3 models to upgrade.

Smok Novo Master Kit Air Flow

Smok Novo Master Air Flow

The stepless airflow control on the Smok Novo Master Kit has a much higher quality and durable feel than the dial system used on the Novo 4 and 5. It is located on the side of the device and can be manipulated while you puff, if that is something you feel like doing. Wide-open, it allows for a very loose draw that takes advantage of the 30W watts of power. Slam it just for a taut pull and dense flavor.

Smok Novo Master Kit Boost Mode

Smok Novo Master DIsplay Light

The Smok Novo Master Kit offers a 30W power mode and a Standard Mode that adapts to the pod installed. The light will flash either green or red after two clicks of the power button. If its red you are in the enhanced 30W mode and green signifies that your pod system is in Standard Mode.

The increased power is a huge upgrade for anyone who wants a compact freebase, high-VG vape, vapes in the direct-lung style or is benchmarking performance against some of the more ostentatious disposable vapes on the market. You will be glad to have faster type-C charging on tap and the fast to fill new pod designs if you stick with the ramped up 30W mode.

Smok Novo Master Pods

Filling the Smok Novo Master Pod

In theory, the new Smok Novo Master Pod is a more leak-proof design. It is incredible easy to fill as the port is perfectly fitted for a salt nic bottle, which is what most pod system customers use. Removing the top-fill cap can be a bit tricky at first as it is quite firmly attached. There is also no reason to squeeze in every drop. Opposite the red fill port is an air hole and juice will come out that side if you are too aggressive.

E-liquid capacity remains the same at 2ml. The 0.6ohm and 0.7ohm integrated coils seem a bit thirstier than the old Novo 2 and 3 pods that also work with this pod system.

Smok Novo Master Appearance

Smok Novo Master Appearance

The Smok Novo Master may be compatible with the Novo 2 and 3 but it is a larger and heavier device. Some of this can be traced to premium materials and superior fit and finish. But it is also almost 20mm longer and weighs 20g more. This equates to almost 3/4ths of an inch and 2/3rds of an ounce. Hardly a deal breaker but the size and weight difference are hard to miss.

Smok Novo Master Battery Light

The tiny light on the old designs has been replaced by a larger bar, which displays battery charge and device status. It turns red when you switch to Boost Mode and is green in Standard Mode. Unlike the Master Box, there is no hanging hole and lanyard to allow you to carry you vape around your neck.

Smok Novo Master versus Smok Novo Master Box

In terms of colors, the cobra and color splash patterns are nowhere to be found. They are all pared down options like black carbon fiber, silver laser, silver carbon fiber, matte black, cyan blue, red black, pink black, green black, pale pink, and purple pink. Some of these are leather series colors, as we outline below. The Novo Master Box comes in the same set of colors. This more discrete and refined approach is inexplicably described as "Thugs in Suits" on the Smok website.

Adult vapor consumers will appreciate the restrained style of the Master Kits. The leather series adds a grippier surface to an already dense device.

Final Thoughts Smok Novo Master Kit

Compared to the Smok Novo Master Box, the regular Master Kit pod system has a fire button and a different device form factor. The Novo Master Box is a square design with the battery stacked parallel to the electronics and the charging port on the side. If the classic Novo style and a fire button enhances your vaping experience, the regular Novo Master is a no-brainer.

Final Specs Smok Novo Master

Compared to the Smok Novo 2X kit, which is a Novo 2 with a USB-C charging port, the Master Kit offers a secondary power mode, a bigger battery and new pod designs. Even if you are vaping Novo 2 pods, that is plenty of reason to pick the Novo Master pod system. The Smok Novo 2X is smaller but the newly upgraded 2X pod can be enjoyed in your Master kit.

If you are looking to upgrade from an old Novo, the type-C charging is reason enough, but the performance upgrades are very real, and you can burn through any surplus pods.
