Although vape pens have come a long way over the last several years with plenty of technological advances and upgrades, the basic structure has not changed much. Even with advanced functions and sophisticated technology, the general makeup of a vape pen is relatively simple. A vape pen is generally made up of the following major components:
Battery: The largest vape pen component is the battery, which makes up the body of the device. Temperature and wattage-controlled devices have circuit boards that can manage the power output of the battery. This gives users a range of wattages, providing a more customised vaping experience. For vape pens, batteries are usually built into the device.
Tank: The tank is where the vape juice is held and the coil is housed. They have a max capacity of 2 mls in the UK, and therefore won’t exceed this size. They can also come with the option of buying either a replacement or an extended glass tube. Vape pens come with either a tank or a pod to store the e-liquid in.
Pods: Your vape pen may have a pod instead of a tank, depending on the device. The pod is where vape juice is held and the coils are housed. Like vape pen tanks, they can have a max capacity of up to 2 mls. This is the maximum capacity for pods available in the UK.
The coil is housed within the tank or pod, and together, they convert vape juice into vapour. The vape coil is a heating element with a cotton wick. Vape juice is drawn into the coil through the wick, heated, and turned into vapour. Like most devices, the coil will need to be changed frequently, as it will begin to wear out and you will notice this with a flavour drop.
Some tanks/pods have adjustable airflows, which you can customise to suit your vaping style. Minimising the airflow gives users a tighter draw, thinner vapour and a more noticeable throat feel. This provides the MTL (Mouth-to-Lung) vaping experience. Meanwhile, opening up the airflow completely cools the vapour down and provides a more airy hit with thicker clouds and less of an intense throat experience - known as DTL (Direct-to-Lung) vaping.
Mouthpiece: This component makes vaping comfortable by giving you a tip to draw vapour from. Some devices have a cylindrical mouthpiece that allows maximum vapour to escape into your mouth. Others are more ergonomically designed, and can be indented in the middle to contour the shape of your lips.
With only a few simple components, vape pens are able to give users a powerful vaping experience. In general, vape pens are activated by a small button on the device. This button activates the battery which pushes power into the tank/pod, heating the coil. Vape juice is drawn into the coil through wicking material, which is transformed into vapour. This vapour is delivered through the mouthpiece and into the user’s mouth to be enjoyed and appreciated.
Sometimes, you’ll need to replace vape parts, as they can wear out after a certain amount of use. Explore our vape parts page to see what’s available.
While there are many vape pens out there to suit a variety of different vapers, these aren’t the only choice you have available. Today, there are several vape device categories for you to choose from, such as:
With hundreds of vape pens on the market, it can be hard to know which one to choose. Today, there are vape pens made for all types of vapers. Modern designs cater for those who want an experience that more closely resembles smoking, vapers who prefer something powerful, those who want a versatile tank, or vapers looking for a small discrete device.
There are several factors that come into play when considering the best device. Some of these include coil resistance, functionality, and design.
Coil resistance: Coils are rated at a specific ohm or resistance level. Sub-ohm vaping, for instance, refers to vaping at a resistance level under 1.0 ohm. In general, ohm levels in vaping start at around 0.3 ohms and go up to around 2.5 ohms. The lower the resistance, the higher the vapour production and the more power that will be pulled from the battery. One key to choosing the best vape pen is to know what your preferred vaping experience is. If you prefer a high level of vapour production, choose a device that accepts coils with lower resistance. Alternatively, if you prefer less vapour and stronger nicotine content and experience, a device that’s compatible with above-ohm coils and nicotine salts with a 50/50 VG/PG rating might suit you better.
Functionality: Modern vape pens include a variety of functions and capabilities. Knowing what type of functionality is important to you is critical to choosing the right vape pen device. For example, some vape pens have digital screens that give important information about the device, like battery life and vaping wattage. Some vape pens have the ability to adjust wattage and temperature, while others do not, and are activated simply by drawing on the device. Choosing a device that has the right mix of features is important to ensure that you’ll enjoy your vape for the long term.
Design: At one point, many vape pens mimicked the look of a cigarette. Today, however, devices come in all types of shapes, colours, and designs - ensuring that you’ll find a device that fits your personality. Some devices even have coloured LED lights that allow the device to glow.
When searching for a vape pen, choose a device that checks all the boxes on your personal list. If maximising vapour production is the most important factor to you, find a device with low resistance and higher power. If having the most control over your vaping experience is most important, choose a device that has features like wattage control. If the design is a major factor for you, choose a device that has the colour, patterns and shapes that you prefer most.
The point is, no matter what your preferences are - there’s a vape pen that’ll meet them. The quality of your vaping experience will be directly linked to your choice of device. The device that’s perfect for one vaper may not be perfect for another. Find the device that matches your requirements and you can ensure a perfect experience, each and every time.
There is no shortage of vape pen manufacturers on the market today. It almost seems like every week a new brand is joining the industry with a new vape pen device. Don’t be fooled - there’s a major difference between fly-by-night vaping brands that show up one day and disappear the next and the leading brands that have been around from the start.
Does it matter what brand you buy from? It absolutely does! Vape pen parts aren’t typically compatible with cross-brand. This means, if you purchase from a vape pen brand that doesn’t last - you might end up stuck with a useless device that you can’t find any parts. On the other hand, long-standing brands that have been in the industry for years and years often have parts that can be found easily - meaning you can quickly and easily find the components you need.
When it comes to vape pen brands that you can trust there are tried and true industry-leading brands that we recommend:

Vape pens are a type of vaping device known for their slim and discrete design. They’re small yet powerful vapes that often come in a cylindrical form, with a rechargeable battery and refillable tank or pod on the top. These devices are easy to carry about when you’re on the go. They’re great for those just transitioning from smoking to vaping, as they aren’t too overbearing, but deliver enough vapour for a satisfying experience.
Each airline will have its own rules and regulations around vapes and whether you can take them on board a flight. It’s also important to know that rules around vapes on flights could change at any time. Find further information on whether you can currently take a disposable vape pen on the airlines below:
Read the instructions that come with your vape pen device to learn how to properly turn it off. The way you turn off a vape pen will depend on the specifics of the device. Some vape pens are draw-activated, meaning they’re fired by simply inhaling into the mouthpiece. Some have a firing button, which can be used to turn the device on and off.
Typically, a vape pen will come with a type of cover over its fill port, sealed by either a removable top cap or silicone stopper. You’ll need to lift this cover away to fill up the device. Each pod or tank will have a unique design, so check the user manual for its location and filling instructions.
