Help Defeat Rep. Liz Thomson - UPDATE!
Gregory Conley, the author of the following piece, is the President of the American Vaping Association and a research fellow with the Heartland Institute. He previously served for approximately three years as the volunteer Legislative Director for the Consumer Advocates for Smoke-free Alternatives Association. The article below is written by Conley as an individual and not on behalf of any organization or company.
Dear Fellow Vaper,
I'm going to keep this brief because, believe it or not, I don’t really like bringing up politics with a large group of people who may have different views than mine. And while this isn’t exactly like talking politics at a dinner party, the vapor community is actually a pretty big crowd.
Truth be told, that's the reason I thought this note was worth sending—because we need to do something big, together, to stop an enemy of our industry from getting re-elected so she can no longer continue with her plan to decimate this community.
We can allow politicians to continue to say whatever falsehood they want, ban our flavors and tax us to the hilt like tobacco. Sure. That is an option, I guess.
Or, together, we can send them a message nationwide by making an example of one of the worst offenders – and one who is involved in a very tight re-election campaign -- by defeating her and throwing her out of office.
No matter where you are located, you can help send a message to legislators nationwide by volunteering for a “get-out-the-vote” effort to be sure New Mexico State Representative Liz Thomson is defeated by her opponent in the upcoming election.
WHY THIS MATTERS
Look, there are a lot of causes in the world that we should care about. As an "activist" (I really prefer the term "engaged citizen"), I do what I can to draw attention to them. Because of the work I do seven days a week, I can’t stop thinking about the immense threat the vapers truly have upon them due to bad lawmakers.
But here's the thing: If you care about any individual causes, then you have to care about elections—because so much boils down to who we allow to make the laws we live under. And this election is particularly important to vapers—and the people who love them.
There are too many politicians downright lying about the vapor products you love. From saying vapor is just as bad (or worse) than cigarettes to claiming they must “protect the children” by taxing them to the point you can’t afford to buy them. The only way to give them pause is to take down one of their own in a very big and public way during an election and make them think twice about trying to grab headlines by beating up on vapers and the vapor industry.
ON THE GROUND OR BY TELEPHONE -- HOW YOU CAN HELP
Pamela Gorman, from NJOY Government Affairs, and I are taking a week off from our regular work and flying to New Mexico to dedicate ourselves to helping Liz Thomson’s opponent over the top to victory. If you want to come to Albuquerque and work alongside us with the campaign to elect her opponent, Conrad James, that would be fantastic!
We will be sure to get you plugged in and comfortable with the campaign volunteer work that we need to do to win this thing. Just click here now to let us know you are going to come and join the ground team.
I live in New Jersey, and there's no winnable race here this year where I have a chance to take out a proven enemy of vaping. Instead, the action right now is in New Mexico. That is where our opportunity lies to win big and really make a big impression on lawmakers across the country. What voters in New Mexico decide to do—or not do—will impact me, too. So, that is where I am headed to work. But, I know many cannot get to Albuquerque and want to help. Fortunately, there is plenty you can do from home!
If you're willing to make a few calls to help get voters to the polls in this state legislative race that matters most in terms of making an example of a BAD POLITICIAN, then click here right now to sign up for your calling shift.
If you care about your ability to legally buy flavors of e-liquid you love, afford to purchase the products you need, and the ability of your local vapor shop to stay in business, then I hope you'll make a few calls to voters this week.
It's good being in the struggle with all of you, and I'm looking forward to hearing about the thousands of voters who turn out to vote because of our calls. We are tired of being kicked around and we aren’t going to show them that we are NOT going to take it anymore!
Thanks for all you do.
We would like to be able to demonstrate a HUGE outpouring by our community to both her opponent and the governor, who is watching this race closely. So, we are hoping to hand Conrad James’ campaign manager a big list of names willing to help from our vaping community by October 28th. However, we will need callers all the way up until Election Day on November 4th. There isn’t much time, so please act today! Sign up to help us at
